The Ice Age left
a strong impression on the landscape of Cavan, covering the area with
small rounded hills known as Drumlins. They are acknowledged as the
best examples in Europe and attract many visitors every year to study
and admire these distinct land formations. Scattered among these undulating
hills are 365 clear, sparkling lakes, "one for each day of the
year", as the saying goes. These are home to a large variety
of waterbirds and fish and because of this Cootehill has established
itself as Ireland's Premier Fresh Water Fishing location.
This map introduces you to the many attractions in and around Cootehill
and also to help the visitor who would like to explore the places
of interest in neighbouring counties. Whether it be the historical
and archaeological sites of the Boyne Valley to the south, the majestic
Mourne Mountains to the east, the Ulster American Folkpark to the
north or Flourencecourt and the Marble Arch Caves to the west, you
can be assured of a memorable drive and a thoroughly satisfying day
out.
